On the eve of the 87th International Peace Marathon, Mayor Knapík received participants and organizers of the marathon in the historical Town Hall. The delegation included foreign runners from Kenya and Ethiopia who ranked among the best in the race in the last decade.
At the meeting, Mayor Knapik presented Christa Vahlensieck, an unprecedented five-time winner of the marathon race in 1981, 1984, 1986, 1987, and 1988, with the Plaque of the Mayor of Kosice. Mrs. Vahlensieck was also one of those that helped enhance sister-city relationship between Košice and the German city of Wuppertal.
This years Košice Peace Marathon is linked with the anniversary of the bronze runner from the Peace Marathon Square. This year, the statue of „the Messenger of Victory" celebrates its 50th anniversary. Special attention was paid to the statue on Saturday evening when Košice through the European Capital of Culture 2013 project joined a renowned European project called „White Night – Nuit Blanche". The night of lights and sounds started on the Peace Marathon Square where Mayor Knapik along with the President of the Kosice Marathon Club, Štefan Daňo, and other guests lit the marathon fire.
